Habits … an ongoing theme in my life! My life has changed so much over the past four years and now that I’m starting to settle, I need to review my routines and habits and make sure that they are healthy and helpful.
Habits are not inherently good or bad. They just are. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a habit is defined as “a settled tendency or usual manner of behaviour; a behavior pattern acquired by frequent repetition or physiologic exposure that shows itself in regularity or increased facility of performance.” The Cambridge English Dictionary defines a habit as “something that you do often and regularly, sometimes without knowing that you are doing it”.
A habit is something we’ve learned do, do often and now it’s almost subconscious. You don’t have to think about brushing your teeth before you go to bed or when you get up in the morning. You just do it because you’ve always done it … and you don’t really think about how you brush your teeth, you just do it. Similarly, if you have learned to drive a car, you don’t think about when to change gear (if you drive a stick shift car), how to slow the car down, etc. You just drive. You’ve been doing it for years. It has become a habit.
God wants us to habitually walk with Him. He instructed Abraham in Genesis 17:1 to “walk [habitually] before Me [with integrity, knowing that you are always in My Presence], and be blameless and complete [in obedience to Me]. Genesis 17:1 AMP.
Walk [habitually] before Me [with integrity, knowing that you are always in My Presence], and be blameless and complete [in obedience to Me].
Genesis 17:1 AMP
When I read this scripture, the words “knowing that you are always in My Presence” leapt out at me. We get so busy with our lives, running here, running there, doing this, doing that, and we forget that God is all around us. We are always in His Presence.
He is here and we forget about Him, sometimes for days, weeks, months, even years. You know how painful it is when someone you love gets so wrapped up in something else and forgets you even exist. Imagine how God feels when we ignore Him, walk away from Him, when He’s offering us abundant life.
The key to having God’s ‘abundant life’ is keeping Him in His rightful place in our priorities
Joyce Meyer
We need to develop the habit of talking to Him, worshiping Him, and learning about Him in His word. He is true to His promise – He will never leave us nor forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:8).
One day at a time, you and God can do anything!
Joyce Meyer
